River System

A river system structure consists of the main river body that originates from the headwater source, tributary streams, oxbow lakes, and flood plains, including the groundwater table of the area to the delta and estuary in the river mouth region. Watershed and drainage basin are alternate terms that refer to a river system.

The system components together with their relationships function in totality, and itvaries in the upstream, midstream, and downstream areas of a river.

Why this Platform?

Rivers in Kerala become sick to the extent that many of the river ecosystem services have been stopped functioning! There are many indicators ranging from polluted water, narrowing flow channels, loss of flood plains, and degradation of catchment area and riparian vegetation, to continuous loss of indigenous fresh-water biodiversity and other river resources to show that the river life and the river ecosystem services in the state, are severely threatened.
