River System

A river system structure consists of the main river body that originates from the headwater source, tributary streams, oxbow lakes, and flood plains, including the groundwater table of the area to the delta and estuary in the river mouth region. Watershed and drainage basin are alternate terms that refer to a river system.

The system components together with their relationships function in totality, and itvaries in the upstream, midstream, and downstream areas of a river.

Rivers of Kerala

Kerala is drenched by 44 rivers originating from the Western Ghats, of which three flow eastwards and the rest to the west and confluence with the Arabian sea. All these rivers are fed by smaller tributaries and water canals. Periyar, Bharathapuzha, Pampa, Meenachil, Chalakkudy, Chaliyar, Kallai, and Chandragiri are the more popular rivers in the state.
