Kerala is drenched by 44 rivers originating from the Western Ghats, of which three flow eastwards and the rest to the west and confluence with the Arabian sea. All these rivers are fed by smaller tributaries and water canals. Periyar, Bharathapuzha, Pampa, Meenachil, Chalakkudy, Chaliyar, Kallai, and Chandragiri are the more popular rivers in the state.
